Walawála Plaza
What began as a temporary street closure during the COVID-19 pandemic has transformed the corner of First & Main Streets into one of downtown Walla Walla’s most beloved public spaces – Walawála Plaza. Initially known as First Avenue Plaza, the area was closed to vehicles in 2020 to create a safe, outdoor environment where residents and visitors could gather, dine, and connect under public health guidelines.
As restrictions eased, the community’s attachment to the space became clear—people didn’t want to lose this new heart of downtown. Recognizing its significance, the City made the plaza permanent and renamed it Walawála Plaza, honoring the region’s Indigenous heritage. “Walawála,” meaning “many small streams” in the Sahaptin language, reflects both the area’s name and its deep cultural roots.
