Café Corazón
I had their latte flat—so smooth and flavorful. And don’t skip the empanadas! The apple empanada with caramel sauce was absolutely delicious. A cozy spot with great vibes and even better treats! ☕🥟🍎✨
See MoreHarry S. Truman Presidential Library & Museum
This museum was unlike anything we’ve seen before, so interactive and engaging, even for younger kids! My 6-year-old had a blast exploring all the rooms, watching videos, and doing the hands on activities.
We spent about 2.5 hours learning about history, of that era, Truman’s life and presidency. Honestly, we could’ve stayed longer if we didn’t have another adventure planned!
There’s so much to take in, and the interactive displays really make history come to life.
See MorePioneer Trails Adventures
Pioneer Trails Adventures was hands down one of the highlights of our trip!
We got to step back in time and explore the rich history of Independence, MO, from the comfort of a covered wagon! We did the 90-minute tour and absolutely loved every minute.
We rolled through streets once traveled by pioneer settlers, Civil War generals, Frank & Jesse James, Wild Bill Hickok, and even President Harry S. Truman.
Our guide (also the owner) was fantastic, so knowledgeable, entertaining, and clearly passionate about sharing the local history. He made several stops along the way, sharing fascinating stories that brought the past to life.
This experience kept our whole family engaged. YES, even the kids! I honestly wish we had more time to soak it all in.
10/10 recommend—would give it more stars if I could!

See MoreUp Dog
After the historic Pioneer tour, we were hungry and stumbled upon Up Dog in Independence Square, and we’re so glad we did! 🌭
They’re known for their creative hot dog menu, and YES—the Chicago-style dog totally hit the spot. The atmosphere was super welcoming, and we loved the fun retro decor that added to the charm.
Not into hot dogs? No worries, they’ve got delicious options for everyone, from smashburgers to Philly cheesesteaks and mini corn dogs (perfect for the kids!)
See MoreBurr Oak Woods Conservation Area
We stopped at Burr Oak Woods Conservation Area in the second half of the day, as the rain was moving in, and it was the perfect place to explore and stretch our legs! The visitor/nature center was closed l but we hiked the 📌Bethany Falls Trail—a scenic and easy 1.33-mile loop through second growth forest, a limestone glade, and a seasonal creek. Peaceful, beautiful, and just what our family needed to recharge! 🌿👣

We spent about an hour at the Museum of Illusions, and both of my boys (ages 6 and 17) had a blast. It’s rare to find a place that keeps both a kindergartner and a teen entertained, but this one nailed it.
See MoreGrinders Pizza
We had dinner at Grinders Pizza, and it totally lived up to the hype! 🍕🔥 My little one loved his giant pineapple slice, and we devoured the Big KC Huna BBQ Pizza—pulled pork, ham, pineapple, jalapeños, and BBQ drizzle. Awesome flavor, chill vibe, and great for the whole family!
