Caption: Having grown up in Southern California I am a beach gal through and through. It is my happy place and the only spot I truly unwind after a stressful day. Living in LA it requires a bit of an effort to get there with traffic but it is always worth it. Zuma is by far my favorite LA beach.

Caption: The things I like best about Zuma are the colors. The sand is fine and smooth. The rocks are reds and purples. The kelp greens and oranges. The light changes with the day and season. Sometimes it is bluer. Other times more purple. Occasionally blazing orange.

Caption: I'm a little obsessed with sea birds. Plovers are one of my favorite. They show up every fall after the summer crowds have dissipated. I could watch them for hours running up and down along the shore searching for crabs.

Caption: You don't typically find cormorants at Zuma. They are often a mile north at El Matador. This guy was hanging out all alone. I love their shiny iridescent feathers. Seeing cormorants is always a joy. They remind me of the book ISLAND OF THE BLUE DOLPHINS, a childhood favorite.

Caption: Zuma has great surfing in the morning but in the afternoon the water is fairly calm and the breaks mostly absent. It is a great spot to learn to surf for this reason.
