The Guadeloupe Islands
Lesser Antilles, Caribbean

Caption: Welcome to Guadeloupe, the prettiest collection of French Caribbean islands. Locals call it “Petit Secret” — though the French have been coming for ages, the archipelago has mostly flown under the radar.

Caption: It’s LUSH. There are volcanic hot springs on Basse-Terre; mud baths at Babin Beach on Grande Terre; surfing at Capesterre; and awesome snorkeling and diving at Jacques Cousteau Reserve (with a sunken statue of Cousteau himself).

Caption: It’s COLORFUL. The Guadeloupe Islands are picture-perfect, with indoor-outdoor living: the doors and windows of brightly painted houses are thrown open; the atmosphere is convivial. Palm trees and white sand beaches are everywhere. And there’s a lot of sunshine. Terre-de-Haut island is the cutest with pretty Creole houses, healthy reefs, and a big international sailing scene. Though it’s very unhurried, It has a cosmopolitan vibe. And even the humblest beach shops offer excellent picnic options (French cheese, cured meats, good wine!).

Caption: It’s HISTORIC. The views from Fort Napoleon are killer. You can get a good look at the beautifully landscaped monument — but also a cool and up-high view of the other islands as well as all the action on the water.

Caption: There’s music and dancing everywhere in the capital city. Pointes-a-Pitre. If you like New Orleans, you are in for a treat. Same kind of joie de vivre.

Caption: And the food! It’s so good. Afro-Caribbean with Colonial French influences.
