Picture

Values
Colors.
Patterns.
History.
Traditions we hold dear.
That's what I have in mind while embracing the ageless beauty of Indonesian Wastra.

Caption: Many of us, particularly me, have been smitten by the richness and boldness of Indonesian traditional fabrics.
Batik, tenun, ikat, tapis, songket, pelepai, endek, sasirangan, ulos, tais.... And so many more.
You name it.
And it all will make you flabbergasted.
Picture
Caption: And it's only natural that I head-over-heels fall in love with this beauty.

Picture
Caption: I can not recall when exactly I started my collection of wastra nusantara.
Perhaps since my grandma gave me her handmade Batik from Cirebon.
That was in 1992, when I was just a senior high student anxious to wear kebaya and kain for a school event.

Or maybe, when I happily received a piece of beaded and embroidered shawl from West Kalimantan from a dear friend.

Caption: For sure, it doesn't take long for my love affairs with Wastra Nusantara to blossom

Caption: Whenever I travel to any parts of Indonesia, my first 'hunting session' is for Wastra Nusantara.
The traditional fabrics from many corner of my beautiful INDONESIA.
There is something about it that keep my eyes, and my heart, on it.
To have it and respect it with all my heart.

Picture
Caption: All of these traditional fabrics from Indonesia are the labour love.
Many of them took months, or even years, to make.
Picture
Picture
Caption: And each and every one of it has its own story.
Be it a cheerful patterns of love worn in happy ocassion like marriage and welcoming newborn. Or a rather solemn one for funeral or perhaps grandeur events like coronations. Even simply graduating from childhood to the adult world.
Picture
Picture
Caption: And the 'hunting' process is such an eye-opener as well to me.
How a piece of cloth, fabricated with persistent and love, carries your true identity and self-recognition.
The amount of love and passion being poured to this work of art.

Picture

Picture
Picture
Caption: I have to say, I am still amidst my own quest of getting to know more of all those specific patterns, symbols, and colors.
Picture
Caption: Tenun Buna from East Nusa Tenggara
Picture
Caption: Some patterns dated back to the megalithic era, perhaps mimicking the first discovery of shapes by human kinds.
Others are artistically portraying mother nature - clouds, stars, the sun, waves, animals and more.
As the pictures shown here, all from my private collection, the patterns vary.

Picture
Caption: Looks like my journey for the undying love of Wastra Nusantara will continue.
Would you like to join me?
