Caption: Vicenza is a bit overlooked by tourists if compared to the very busy neighbouring Verona.

Caption: But you can't understand Vicenza, also called "la città del Palladio", if you don't know who Andrea Palladio was.

Caption: Andrea Palladio Palladio is the most illustrious citizen of Vicenza. He was the most important architect of the Republic of Venice, in the 16th Century; he designed many villas of the Venetian aristocracy and many important buildings in Vicenza.
Influenced by Roman and Greek architecture, the "palladianism" has become a popular architectural style.
The White House in Washington is just one of the many buildings around the World inspired by the work of Andrea Palladio.

Caption: At one end of Corso Palladio, the street that runs through the centre of the old town, there's the Olympic Theatre, one of the creations by Andrea Palladio.
Constructed between 1580-85, inside you can find the oldest stage set existing, and the outside is also quite spectacular.

Caption: Piazza dei Signori The central square of Vicenza is Piazza dei Signori. It's here that the weekly market and Summer events take place.

Caption: The column on the left was erected in 1464; the winged lion on top represents the Republic of Venice, of which Vicenza was part.
In 1640 was added the second column, with the statue of Christ the Redeemer on top.

Caption: The Basilica with the beautiful loggia is probably the main attraction in town. It used to serve as the seat of the Government, but today it hosts exhibitions.
Caption: Sometimes the terrace of the Basilica is open to public. If so, don't miss the chance to see the piazza and surrounding streets from above.
