Caption: Week twenty one was a week of dramatic and moody skies. As this was week nine of lockdown, we were still staying close to home, so all these walks are local: to the harbour and along the sea front, and at the ash lagoons. Seeking the quiet moments, and the solitude of late evening walks with few people around.

Caption: Over these lockdown weeks I’ve always been looking for photos of solo people on these walks. Sometimes I’m solo - I was on this walk - and I enjoy these times to myself. But during lockdown I wondered when I saw people walking or sitting alone (can you see the figure here?) about whether they were merely alone by choice, or were perhaps lonely. In these distanced days, being alone isn’t always a choice.

Caption: These walks along the sea front can feel very different depending on the tide. At low tide, I’ll sometimes head out over the sand, avoiding the densely packed mussel beds (these shells can be sharp for paws), to look for a different perspective for photos.

Caption: This was during lockdown, before people could meet with others outside, and these lads were just sussing me out. The two youngest lads were about to try and dive off the harbour - or at least climb down a ladder into the water. Maybe they thought I was about to say something - like, don’t do it as it’s blowing a gale and the current’s strong. Or maybe they thought I was going to have a word about their lack of social distancing. But I was just taking a photo. That was all.

Caption: During lockdown, someone - or maybe a number of people? - started arranging the driftwood on the beach, creating these columns and even combining some pieces. Viewed together like this, the driftwood took on the look of an installation on the beach. And it was always changing and evolving. I never found out who did this or why, but it was an interesting creative lockdown project for someone.
