Caption: TIMOR LESTE A Portuguese colony for over 450 years, Timor Leste (East Timor) was invaded by Indonesia in 1975, just a few months after declaring its independence from Portugal.
The Indonesian occupation lasted for 24 years and took the lives of over 100,000 Timorese.
Caption: The country had its independence recognized and celebrated only in 2002, and the Timorese are now trying to start a new, and brighter, chapter in their history.
