Caption: The Southwestern United States - commonly referred to as the American Southwest or simply The Southwest - is a region of the western United States, warmer than the northern states and drier than the eastern states.
Its population is less dense than neighboring areas, and with significant Spanish American, Mexican American, and American Indian populations. It is also more ethnically varied than neighboring areas.

Caption: After the war of 1812, The Southwest generally meant Missouri, Arkansas, and Louisiana, then Texas was included.
After the war with Mexico, the territory was yielded under the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo (1848), including land often claimed as part of The West such as New Mexico, Arizona, and all parts of Oklahoma, Colorado, Utah, and Nevada.

✔ Albuquerque receives less snow than other cities, but still receive significant snowfalls in the winter time.
✔ Nevada and Arizona are both generally arid with desert lands and mountains, and receive large amounts of snow in the higher elevations in and near the mountains.
✔ New Mexico, Utah, and Colorado are generally arid, with desert lands and mountains as well.
✔ West Texas is generally arid as well but does not receive the same amount of snow that the other southwestern states receive at their high elevations.
