The Levadas divert rainwater from the mountains down to farmland and towns. They allow access to parts of the island that would otherwise be impossible on foot.

In most cases the drop off to the left is straight down to the valley floors. Luckily the view is a little obscured by the amazing plants.
It’s not for the feint hearted in some places. We did see a few people freezing up on the narrowest parts.
