Video of Algerabrug
Caption: The Hollandsche IJssel is probably best known for one of the Dutch’ proudest features: the Delta Works. At the Hollandsche IJssel, you will find the first structure of the Delta Works, the Algerakering. It’s also known as the Hollandse IJssel storm surge barrier.
Immediately after the flood disaster of 1953, the Dutch government decided to build a storm surge barrier in the Hollandse IJssel on the advice of the Delta Committee. The Algerakering protects the lowest part of the Netherlands. A huge part of The Netherlands is below sea level so we have to control the rivers in our country. The Netherlands is very strong in innovative hydraulic engineering and this is definitely one of the highlights. That is one of the reasons why the delta work has been declared a national monument.
