Caption: During our time in Washington D.C., we experienced the difference in American culture. We learned about each other, and we were surrounded by peers who were there to help one an other become better journalists and leaders in our field.

Caption: Day One While traveling around the U.S. capitol and navigating the many Smithsonian museums, we got to learn more about each other. If not for this trip, we wouldn’t have been able to find the friendships and bonds we did.

Caption: Day #2 We were privileged with a visit to the Supreme Court. We toured the exhibits and listened to an interpreter describe the history of the court and the process for ruling on cases.

Caption: We were honored to hear Mary Beth Tinker talk about her court case involving the First Amendment and the action of wearing an armband to school allowed students to have freedom of speech. Before this the students speech stopped at the school house gates.

Caption: Chuck Todd was the Keynote Speaker at the conference. He taught us the importance of high school journalism in rural areas and why it’s vaulable because it’s most likely the only news source in the community.

Caption: Day 3: We attend sessions. These classes were filled with student journalist wanting to learn from each other and professional speakers about how to become better journalists, better leaders in the classroom, and better prepared for our futures.

Caption: During our last day in D.C. our group learned more about how to improve the work space. Once sessions were over we all bonded with each other until it was time to head home.

Caption: Our flight got delayed and time was in a crunch for our flight back home, we were rushing to the gate, but we all made it safely on the flight!

We learned so many great journalism tools and leadership strategies that we are bringing back to our classroom. This trip taught us a lot about who we are as people.
