is one of the seven medieval Transylvanian Saxon citadels and it is the most spectacular one, preserving along the centuries the best local architecture and character.
The first documented mention of the settlement dates back to 1280 but it is inhabited since the XVIth century BC.

Caption: The core of Sighisoara burg was fortified with walls during the XIIIth century. In XIVth century, in the city were established craftsmen organized into 19 strong guilds, who had a very important role in economic and social-politic development of the city.

Caption: Nine guild towers still exist of the original 14. The Clock Tower also known as the Council Tower was built in the second half of the 14th century. The four small corner turrets on top of the tower symbolized the judicial autonomy of the Town Council, which could apply, if necessary, the death penalty.
