Caption: The Lakes Trail Round trip from the trailhead to Pear Lake is a little over 12 miles. A short way up the trail you're greeted with incredible views from the Watchtower, a granite pinnacle standing nearly 2000 feet above the valley floor. Unfortunately during this trip, the trail (at some points only about 4-6 feet wide on a precipitous cliff) turned to ice. Without crampons, not feeling like tempting nature or testing our nerves, we backtracked 2 miles and instead headed over the Hump route (a much more demanding grade). Once over the Hump, the trail descends into beautiful alpine scenery towards a series of 4 glacially-made lakes. This hike can be done in a day if you start off early enough, but there are campsites at Emerald and Pear Lakes, and who wouldn't want to wake up to such serene beauty?
