Caption: Seaside in Portugal Nazaré & Sitio
Caption: The seaside towns of Nazaré and Sitio, north of Lisbon, are breathtaking to behold. My mom and I arrived on a sunny day in early May and found ourselves to be the only tourists around. These sleepy, and dreamy, seaside towns are worth a few days to relax and explore the vast history and culture: the fisher people, the Black Madonna, the cuisine, the sunsets, the kindness of the locals...it was a special few days spent in an idyllic setting.

Caption: The women of Nazaré in traditional dress: The Seven Layer Petticoats of Nazaré. These skirts have seven layers to keep the women warm while waiting on the beach for their fisherman husbands to return with their catch. The seven layers, in bright colors and patterns, or black for mourning, make you feel like you're watching history in action as the women parade daily along the beach.
