Caption: Scarecrow The Oldest Cabernet Vines in Napa
Planted in 1945
Caption: In 1945, JJ Cohn planted Cabernet Sauvignon on the Rutherford Bench to sell to John Daniel Jr. at the famed Inglenook. These vines were destined to survive the plague of phylloxera that decimated the area and still remain to this day. They are called the old men. In subsequent years these vines were a source of fruit for Opus one, Beaulieu, Robert Mondavi, and Joseph Phelps.
These vines are now the exclusive source of Scarecrow. Each year the old men vines yield a minuscule 1.5 tons of fruit.
A lot of 5 cases were sold for 125K at Napa Premiere in 2011, and it continues to be one of the most sought after Cabernets in California.
