Caption: This is the best visual aid to parlay a mining "ghost town" to a digital world. It conveys an illusion of emptiness, but Rhyolite is strewn with guts: bullet holes, glass-littered grounds, piles of rusted aluminum cans, railroad spikes, disintegrating oil containers, ovens. Fierce winds use the discards to make music, a soundtrack of discovery.
