Caption: QUESTION 3: What kind of media institutions might distribute your media product?
Caption: Our thriller could either be distributed by a big conglomerate, an independent company, a U.K. Or US based company. I will be telling you my view on why each one would be good or bad for our media product.
Caption: Advantages of conglomerates: By having a conglomerate distribute our media product, it would make our film receive a wider audience as as it would be seen more global. This is because they are able to release it in more countries and get it out in cinemas. This would bring more attention to our film and help make it grow.
Caption: Disadvantages of conglomerates: Firstly, a disadvantage is they receive a big budget from funding. This wouldn't be ideal as we would lose control over our film and it's identity.
Also, we would have to persuade them to take on our film and distribute it. This would be challenging as some conglomerates have guidelines which you have to follow to get your film distributed. This would then involve this changing our ideas.
Caption: Advantages of independent companies: Firstly, as they are smaller companies, we would be able to still control what goes on with decisions made about our film.
They would receive a smaller budget, this can be seen as an advantage as the money can be focused on specific areas, rather than areas which don't need money spent on it.
Caption: Disadvantages of independent companies: Our film might not be as successful as other films because of how there is a lack of exposure compared to if a conglomerate distributed it.
Caption: U.K. Company: If we distributed our film with a U.K. Company, it would have to meet certain criteria as it would have to be classed as a British film. British film is partly publicly funded whether through BFI, BBC or National Lottery.
Not many of films which are funded actually make a profit.
Caption: US Company: If we used a US Company, it might not be a success. This is because our film would have to appeal to a large audience as if it was shown in America, there is a bigger population with people who might not be in to thriller movies.
Caption: YouTube and other social media: Because of globalisation, marketing is free because of people sharing videos and images on social media. This would help our film grow, without us even spending any money. This has helped organisations like Film4 as it's made films cheaper to distribute them.
We could easily upload our thriller onto YouTube and it would cost nothing. This would be accessible for people to watch globally as well.
Caption: BFI Cultural Test: Films can qualify as British by the BFI Cultural Test.
• Our film is set in the United Kingdom.
• Our lead characters are British.
• Our film depicts a British story.
• It has dialogue in English.
-from this, we would qualify as a British film.
Caption: Decision: I think a smaller independent company distributing our thriller would be better. This is because we would be able to still involve ourselves into the decisions made and we'd still have control over the story line of the film. Also, because of social media and people sharing videos, our film could easily still get a lot of different audiences and viewers. If we used a conglomerate, it might of not been a success as it would of had to appeal to larger audiences, meaning the story line would of had to change.
