Picture of Padova
Caption: Padua is an Italian city in the Veneto region. It is famous thanks to Giotto’s frescoes in the Scrovegni chapel as well as its university that was founded in 1222. It also has several monuments and places of worship.

Caption: The basilica of St. Anthony of Padua was built in 1232 to accommodate the relics of the saint. Its façade is Gothic and Romanesque. Its domes and spiers that resemble minarets bear witness to the influence of Byzantine architecture. The church has six chapels and several cloisters. Its high altar is decorated with bronzes by Donatello.

Caption: The cathedral of Padua is the third structure built on the same site. The current church is said to have been designed by Michelangelo in 1551, but the plans have often been changed. Its shape is of a Latin cross and it has an octagonal dome at the crossing of the transept. The façade remains unfinished. The adjacent baptistery was built in the 12th century.

Caption: This palace was built in 1218 to serve as a court and council chamber for the city. It has the largest medieval hall in Europe (81 meters long). The ceiling consists of a huge structural vault. The interior walls were originally frescoed by Giotto, but were destroyed in a fire in 1420. The current impressive frescoes feature panels with the months of the year, the gods and the signs of the zodiac.

Picture of Cappella degli Scrovegni
Caption: The Cappella degli Scrovegni is a Gothic chapel with a single nave. It was sponsored by Enrico Scrovegni (a wealthy patron) in honor of his late father. The walls are covered with masterful frescoes that represent the life of Christ. They were made by the master painter Giotto between 1303 and 1305.
