Caption: Otranto is a seaside town of the Adriatic coast of southern Italy in the region of Puglia. Otranto is the easternmost point of Italy. The city of martyrs is a jewel of Salento and a bridge between West and East. It's a small place with a lovely atmosphere with perfect blue waters and historic buildings and has a colorful past. It was an important Greek and Roman port, called Hydruntum. It was ruled by the Byzantines, the Normans and the Aragonese. Otranto was invaded by Turks in 1480 and 800 locals were executed for refusing to convert to Islam.

Caption: The Castello Aragonese is a might construction which forms part of the tough defence of the city and it was built by the will of Frederick II. The labyrinth of alley and streets typical of this town starts from the square where the castle is situated.

Caption: The Romanesque Basilica of S. Maria Annunziata is the fantastic Cathedral of Otranto with immense artistic and historical value. It was built on the remain of a Christian temple. In the crypt there are many frescos from Middle Age.

Caption: The Martyrs of Otranto were 813 inhabitans of the town who were killed on August 14, 1480 because they refused to convert to Islam when the town was under Ottoman Empire. They were led to Hill Minerva and they were beheaded. The bones and the skulls of the martyrs are stacked behind glass in fhe Cathedral.

Caption: Hidden up winding alleys within the old part of town is a very differtent chuch, the little byzantine church of S. Pietro. Very famous are the Byzantine frescoes inside this building.
