Caption: It's a pedestrian town located 80km, a little over an hour north of Rome by train. It makes an ideal day trip from Rome, but definitely worth spending a night or two or more if you want to use it as a base to explore northern Lazio, southern Tuscany and other areas of Umbria.

Caption: However, for the locals and especially the kids, it's just a spectacular backdrop of one of the only open spaces in the center to kick a ball, ride a bicycle or simply run around and burn off kid energy.

Caption: The Duomo gets all the attention, but on the opposite side of town in a quiet corner is San Giovenale, Orvieto's oldest church built in the year 1004 - a simpler and humbler beauty.

Caption: Most visitors stroll the same two streets - Corso Cavour and Via del Duomo. Please do yourself a favor and get off these two main drags and away from the tourist hordes.
