Caption: When I was thinking about how to do these #shotsoftheweek stories at the start of the year, I wanted to keep to a weekly format - if possible. But the reality is, some weeks I just don’t get out enough, especially in the depths of January and February, and when I do, the weather can be too gloomy or rainy for many photos. So I’m going to keep this story series pretty fluid, and start 2020’s shots of the week stories with photos from the first two weeks of January, and those walks where we found some lovely light amidst the midwinter gloom.

Caption: Friday January 3, and the lads and I headed down the coast to North Berwick with my friend Martin. The tide was out and we walked all the way along the beach with this lovely light and blue sky. These photos don’t show the wind that was blowing - sometimes referred to as a ‘hoolie’ in Scotland. This is one of the features that defines our coastal walks that you simply can’t tell from photos. These walks can look so calm, but more often than not they’re very windy, regardless of the season.

Caption: Sunday January 5, and we headed to Yellowcraig and discovered the most unexpected sky. Looking west, the sky was brooding, promising rain and nightfall, but looking north towards Fife and east, out towards the Bass Rock, the sky was painted in this dreamy palette of orange and lilac.

Caption: Sunday January 12, and again we’d headed down the coast in the afternoon. We hadn’t realised that there was a Motocross event being held very close to our walk at John Muir, so rather than head on our usual route we walked in the opposite direction, away from the noise. We didn’t get far as the incoming tide had cut off the path, but I took a few photos looking towards Belhaven, with this beautiful light on the water.

Caption: And then, when the race was over, we headed back to follow our usual route as the light was fading, arriving at the bay as the sun was setting with pink-tinged clouds drifting across the sky. Tree felling had started. We’ve never seen trees being felled here before (it’s part of a woodland management scheme to enable new trees to be planted, creating a more diverse environment) and there was something about this sight… This is our favourite walk and I feel attached to this landscape more than I do anywhere else, so it was sad to see these trees felled, even though the process is part of the evolution of this woodland.
