with no movie & no mobile phones North of Leh (Ladakh’s capital) lies a far-flung and austerely beautiful enclave cradled by rugged mountains ‒ this is the Nubra Valley, a tuft of land on the very scalp of India.
Nubra is in Diskit area. People say that Diskit likes a ghost town. For me it’s a very peaceful village.
Very quite and peaceful.
Nubra Valley was once on the trading route that connected eastern Tibet with Turkistan via the famous Karakoram Pass. People say that Nubra invites us to a trip back in time into a nearly forgotten ‘Shangri La’.

Caption: Maitreya Buddha The statue perched atop a hillock, facing the Shyok River towards Pakistan and complementing the surroundings.
Maitreya Budhha was constructed in 2006 keeping in mind three objectives :
(1) protection of Diskit Village,
(2) prevention of further war with Pakistan, (3) to promote world peace. The statue was inaugurated by
H.H Dalai Lama in 2010.
On the opposite hill of the Maitreya Buddha is the oldest monastery in Nubra Region, Diskit Monastery. It was founded by Changzem Tserab Zangpo in the 14th century.

The monastery, which houses about 100 monks, runs a school in its precincts.
This school teaches Tibetan children.
The school has been upgraded recently to enable teaching of scientific subjects with support from the Lungta,
a Tibet Support Group.

Caption: Near the siachen The furthest place the permit allows one to visit Nubra valley is Panamik, the last settlement of any size before the Tibetan border.
It's not very wise to proceed further than the provided barrier at the northern edge of the town since this is a rather sensitive border area.
It’s currently under military supervision because the road further leads to the Siachen base camp,
which happens to be
the highest battlefield in the world.
Siachen is a glaciers plus a battlefield of India, Pakistan & China.

Simple but surroundings by great view
in the middle of village.
Unfortunately we were too tired that day
to explore the village that shows
authentic life of villagers.
Diversity is very touching in Nubra.
In the afternoon when sunset came I heard adzan (Islamic call for prayer) from mosque then in the morning I heard sound of Buddhist prayer bowl from monastery. Aaah so peaceful.
