Caption: Gamlebyen or "Old Town" Fredrikstad, a city in the east of Norway, is one of my favorite places to visit.
We used to live in Fredrikstad over 15 years ago and it holds many good memories for us.
With this story I wanted to give you an impression of how lovely and how special this place is.

Caption: The Fortified town was founded in 1567 by King Frederik II, and is today considered one of the best preserved fortified cities in Northern Europe.

Caption: STAR SHAPED The fortress was constructed according to the old Dutch system, with wide moats filled with water and deep earthworks. If you look at the fortification from a birds view, you'll see it's shaped like a star.

Caption: NO SUCCESS STORY The fortress was only attacked once; in August 1814. It was old, weakly manned and it took Crown Prince Karl Johan of Sweden only a few hours of bombardment before the fortress surrendered.

We lived in Fredrikstad for several years about 20 years ago. My oldest son was born here and the next picture shows my husband and son having a connecting moment while enjoying the view of the hospital where he came into this world over 20 years ago.
