Caption: NORTH ISLAND
WILD
Caption: Cape Scott Provincial Park, on the northernmost tip of Vancouver Island, is true Canadian wilderness at its finest
Abundant wildlife, dense forests, and untamed beaches abound along the North Coast Trail, which winds 65km along the beautiful shore of the park
The following are some of my favourite images from one week on the trail
35mm film
Picture
Caption: Parts of the trail are concealed by knee-deep mud and impenetrable temperate rainforest...
Picture
Caption: ...while others follow stretches of untouched beach so long, they make you wonder if you've lost the trail
Picture
Caption: The beaches in Cape Scott are an incredibly tidal environment. The tides enable a huge variety of ocean wildlife to exist, but they can also cause huge beaches to disappear in a matter of hours. Keeps you on your toes!
Picture
Caption: Black bears roam the beaches at low tide, searching for food in the seaweed
Picture
Caption: The slowly lumbering, peaceful, and largely herbivorous bears of Cape Scott are not alone. A group of fast, stealthy predators left us constant clues that they were nearby
We saw large tufts of white fur on logs, and massive paw prints near the water at low tide—we couldn't have been more than a few hours behind
Picture
Caption: The pack of four wolves even left us this ravaged seal carcass to admire. While we knew they were close, we never got to see the majestic BC wolf
Picture
Caption: Sadly, even beaches as remote as those of Cape Scott are home to human waste. Much of it washed up after the Japanese tsunami in 2010
Picture
Caption: Some of the debris is put to good use: without buoys to mark where the trail meets the beaches, it would be easy to get lost or trapped by the rising tide
Picture
Caption: Unfortunately, most of it is just trash. Things like this water bottle are easy enough to remove...
Picture
Caption: ...but most of it is much too large to be carried out by hikers, and is likely to stay right where it is
Picture
Caption: Amazingly, in a whole week on the trail, we only saw one other small group until our last night in the park
Caption: Thanks for reading!
