METRO
Caption: The Moscow Metro is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful underground transit systems in the world.
When the city’s first metro stations were inaugurated in 1935, Stalin wanted them to be “palaces for the people.”
Today, they provide visual evidence of almost a century’s worth of architectural, political and intellectual development.

Caption: Flanked by Art Deco steel columns, Mayakovskaya displays the famous mosaic ensemble “24-hour Soviet Sky” by Alexander Deineka.
During WWII, it functioned as the city’s main bomb shelter. The Council of Ministers even set up their offices on the platform and Stalin gave public speeches on several occasions.

Another stunning station that was used as an air-raid shelter during the Siege of Moscow. Women and children often slept in train carriages parked next to the platforms.
