Beautiful views & volcanoes
Picture
Caption: Puebla lies in a valley surrounded by hills, a few pyramids here and there, and also a few volcanoes, one of which is actually active!
Picture
Caption: If you get to higher ground, you can witness really stunning sunsets and sunrises or simply admire the stunning views!
Picture
Caption: One of those mesmerising sunsets!
Picture
Caption: And one of the many stunning views!
Picture
Caption: These are the Popocatepetl (L) and Iztaccihuatl (R) volcanoes. At the bottom right corner you can see what looks like a hill but is actually a pyramid.
Picture
Caption: The volcanoes are one of the most outstanding features here and if you're lucky after rainy days you'll see them covered in snow!
Picture
Caption: That's actually vapour coming out of the crater
Picture
Caption: There's a pre-hispanic legend, with many versions, saying that a local princess called Iztaccihuatl died whilst waiting for her loved one, Popocatepetl, a warrior sent to war by her father. When he returned he was devastated so he took her to a hill and laid her there then he kneeled beside her guarding her with a torch until he died. The gods then turned them into volcanoes and so Popocatepetl and the smoke from the torch can been seen by the side of his "sleeping" woman's side ever since.
Picture
Caption: This is the view from a church on top of what also looks like a hill but is actually another pyramid... but not just any pyramid it's the one with the largest base in the world!
Picture
Picture
Caption: Iztaccihuatl means "sleeping woman". Her feet are on the left and her head is just above the red and white tower near the centre, on top of the hill.
