Caption: Matera is one of the most interesting tourist destinations in Italy, and has acquired international fame thanks to the "Sassi" prehistoric caverns dug into the rock. Thanks to their similarity with many areas around Jerusalem, the Sassi have been used as sets of several films including "The Gospel According to St. Matthew" by Pasolini and "The Passion of Christ" by Gibson.
