Surf Documentary The Old, the Young & the Sea
Caption: THIS STORY is about the filming trip of our last surf documentary 'The Old, the Young and the Sea'. In 2012 we had the unique privilegue to set out to discover the Atlantic coasts of France, Spain and Portugal. The outcome of this unparalleled trip was the first movie about Europe's surfing culture. We were fortunate to create something people around the world really wanted to watch. A movie capturing a glimpse of the wide heart and soul of surfing in Europe. On the following pages I would like to introduce to you the people behind the production, the approach and some technical details.

Caption: Going Low Profile was the name of the game. Given that we were working on a shoe string budget we had to be a little inventive with our equipment. Basically we shot the movie with two firmware hacked Panasonic GH2. The bigger part of the equipment budget went into those cams and some really good lenses in the 14 - 300 mm range. All stuff you would otherwise mount on regular photo cameras. The boys were squeezing the best out of the available equipment!

Caption: The Most Beautiful coastline was our office. We shot at locations in the Golf of Biscaya, the north of Spain and in central Portugal.
A constant change between pure nature, beautiful rural areas and urban sprawling of the coastal metropols such as San Sebastian, Bilbao or Gijon.

Caption: The best part was working with an amazing amount of interesting people. Each and every day we were blessed with new acquaintances. The sheer amount of fantastic life stories made us dizzy sometimes. It was definitely a tip of a lifetime.

Caption: The First Cut is the deepest. If you haven't ever done a video that's longer than 20 minutes before cutting a 90 minutes doc will surprise you with heaps of ups and downs. Interviews recorded in 5 different languages doesn't make things easier. We got our fair share of learning lessons and 'first timers'.

Caption: Besides going through the sheer amount of video files one of the biggest challenges was to find patterns for a plot within the 130+ interviews
