Picture
Caption: Magpie Mine is a derelict lead mine in the Derbyshire Peak District, between Manchester to the west and Sheffield and Chesterfield to the east.
Picture
Caption: A BRIEF HISTORY The first recorded mention of the mine dates to 1795, although the workings are likely much older.
Its most productive period was the 19th Century.
It closed for the last time in 1958.

Caption: Magpie mine is at the junction of three lead veins - the Magpie vein, the Bole vein and the Butts vein.
Other mines in close proximity mined these other veins, and that led to various disputes.
One of these disputes had a terrible ending...

The men suffocated and they all died underground.
