Caption: A Roman fort was
built by the end of
the 1st century AD
on the hill where Lancaster Castle now stands. In AD 102 the fort was rebuilt in stone. Following the Norman conquest in 1066, Lancaster fell under the control of William I.
Most buildings in the city centre are built during 19th Century when the port was one of the busiest in the UK, famous for slave trade.
