The fortress is over 750 years old and is built on a rock plateau 240 m above the river Elbe. In this story you will learn a few facts about the place. Caption: The entrance is quite impressive and gigantic. Nobody ever managed to conquer it from the outside. Saxon rulers often fled and hid in the fortress in times of crisis and it was also the hiding place for the state treasure several times.

Caption: Inside the walls, you’ll find a little village with about 50 buildings - some older than 400 years old. The fortress is now an open-air military museum and a very popular tourist attraction. Beside checking out the different exhibitions, you can hike along the 1,6 km long wall and enjoy breathtaking views. There are also several restaurants, so you’ll not have to go hungry.

Caption: The Barrel holds up to 249.838 liters of wine! 🍷🎉 Fun fact! The greatest wine barrel in the world is located inside the fortress.

Caption: Inside the fortress there’s also a 152,5 m deep well that was drilled through solid rock in the mid 1500s. It’s the 2nd deepest well in Europe. You’ll find it in the center of the fortress village.

Caption: I really enjoyed the hike around the fortress and the gorgeous views of the Saxon Switzerland national park. There’s also a trail at the bottom of the wall going all the way around. I will try that one on my next visit:)
