Caption: On my tours through Ireland,
I was often was told by guides
that Ireland was once
covered in forests.
Today, while there is a lot of nature,
I see a lot of low lying brush and bog.
Until I got to Killarney National Park, one of the very few places
in Ireland that has been
continuously covered by woodland
for the last 10,000 years ago.

Caption: In 1932, Killarney National Park became Ireland’s first National Park
when Muckross House & Estate was bequeathed to the Irish State.
The park includes the estate
and surrounding lands
totaling 26,000 acres including McGillycuddy Reeks Mountain Range and Ireland’s highest Mountain, Carrauntoohill standing over 3,300ft

Caption: In 1843, Muckross House was built
with an estimated cost
of £30,000 ($1.3M USD).
In 1861, Queen Victoria visited Killarney
and spent 2 nights at Muckross.
Considerable cost was spent improving
her rooms and entertainment
for the Queen.
By 1899, the Queen visit expenses,
loss of rental income and
ill-advised financial investments
caused the owners to sell.
It was owned by 2 more owners
before being given to the Irish State.

on two trips
as part of days going around
the Ring of Kerry.
Honestly, I think this is a place
to spend a few days
and get out and hike
or visit the lakes
as all day adventures.
