Caption: Long before the Greeks settled on this lands and the subsequent Byzantine, Latin and Ottoman empires, the lush areas where the Aegean meets the Black Sea have been the cradle of civilisation in Europe. The Thracians, even though they haven't left much written account of their civilisation, ruled vast areas from there, through the Balkans and Central Europe.

Caption: Visiting Kavala, you certainly get the feeling of history and the mix of cultures, through the architecture and cuisine. That's why I love this town on the gateway to the beautiful beaches of Chalkidiki and the island of Thasos.

Imaret
Caption: The Imaret hotel, a former school for orphaned boys, was built by the general of the Janissaries Muhammad Ali Pasha, also ruler of Egypt. It's a fine example of late Ottoman architecture.
