Caption: and there was sunshine, which has felt like a rare event over the past few weeks. I wanted to clear my head and take the lads for a walk, but Harris and Bracken were having none of it. It was cold outside, and they knew it. So I went solo. By the time I reached this spot, at the eastern end of the beach, I understood why the lads had dug their paws in. The sunshine had fooled me: it was freezing, with a wind chill that I can only describe as ferocious. Hood-up weather. The tide was churning in, heavy waves crashing along the seafront, pushing banks of sodden leaves onto the sand. THURSDAY

An autumn tide, near the mouth of the River Esk; the swollen river carrying the leaves towards the sea; the sea churning those leaves back onto the land. THE SLITHER OF SHORE

Caption: You’ll know this from my stories here. I need the coast. It’s where I exhale. I think it’s because I grew up by the sea. I grew up here, in this town just outside Edinburgh. Moving back here last summer wasn’t easy. Some people feel nostalgic about the place they grew up, but not me. But my good memories, the positive memories I’ve held onto, are from here and this walk along the sea front and the harbour that follows. I’M DRAWN TO THE SEA.

Caption: I wanted to document these places that are rooted in my mind so I started a hashtag series on Instagram called #thefisherrowseries. And recently, on a grey Saturday morning, I took some photos at Fisherrow Harbour for a story here, as an intro to sharing those photos in a series of stories. But that’s for another day. AFTER MOVING BACK HERE

Caption: and what home means, firstly, it means the people - and by ‘people’ I also mean wee hounds, obviously - who are my family. They are my home. But if I look at where we live now, and what part of that signifies ‘home’, then it would be this harbour, the harbour of my childhood. THINKING ABOUT #STELLERHOME
