Many of the lesser-known islands are more affordable than the more famous islands, just as beautiful, and offer a less crowded, more authentically Greek experience.

Caption: The Greek islands have a reputation for being expensive but actually are a great low-cost destination—especially if you avoid Santorini and Mykonos and visit some of the islands I’ve described here. Here are my tips for having a fun (and affordable) trip to the Greek islands....

Caption: Visit in the Shoulder Season ~Avoid the crowds (and high prices) by visiting in the shoulder season. Instead of going in July and August, come in June or September, when the islands are less busy but the weather is still generally nice.

Caption: Book an Inexpensive Room ~Instead of staying at an expensive chain hotel, rent a room from a local on Booking.com. Expect to pay from 30 to 50 Euros a night for a room with a private bathroom, balcony, and basic kitchenette.

Caption: ~Island hop for cheap by visiting islands that are near to each other. Of the islands mentioned here, Sifnos and Serifos are easily combined. Antiparos and Paros are also close to each other. We use the site Rome to Rio to figure out ferry schedules. You can pay as low as 5€ per person for a short ferry ride!
