Caption: A day at Etosha starts early.
You must get up before the sun.
The park opens at sunrise.
As you wait at the gate the orange glow on the horizon promises the excitement of
A new day, a new adventure,
a new experience.
It is Africa.
It is wild.
Picture
Caption: Suddenly, there behind that tree, you see your first elephant.
Will you see any others?
Is this your one chance for pictures?
Go ahead and take few hundred shots.
Picture
Caption: But there are others. There are lots.
Picture
Caption: It is the dry season and animals all seek out the few year-round waterholes.
No one challenges the elephants
but they share the water anyway
with herds of springbok and oryx
and zebras.

Picture
Caption: What you notice right away
is how social they are.
Their trunks are constantly touching and caressing other family members. Their bodies touch a lot.
They seem to constantly seek contact.
Picture
Caption: The sun is relentless.
We never saw a cloud.
Elephants fight back with mud.
Flinging trunks-full of earth
over their heads, they cover themselves with a thick layer.
Etosha sunblock!
Picture
Caption: Etosha closes at sunset.
Our day with the elephants ended
with the last light of day highlighting
three magnificent lions.
We must return tomorrow.
There is so much more Africa to see.
