Perfect blue above and below as sky and water matched each other in a dazzling monochromatic display. It was my first trip alone to the park, and I spent my day wandering in wonder around the rim of the fallen Mount Mazama.

Thousands of years ago,
Mount Mazama erupted so enthusiastically that it gave away its foundation. The peak fell in on itself, leaving a caldera that filled with centuries of rain and snow and formed the deepest lake in the U.S.

Caption: The vibrant blue water is a testament to the lake's uncommon purity. It's the centerpiece of a dramatic landscape, worthy of exploration year round. Summer provides easy access, but winter is just as dazzling, with a thick blanket of shining snow covering the caldera rim. I've visited Crater Lake many times but will never be done admiring that perfect blue water.
