St. Colman’s Cathedral which took 47 years to build.
It’s carillon bell tower holds 49 bells
that play regularly in this town.

has some history!
According to legend,
one of the first colonists of Ireland
was Neimheidh,
who landed in Cork Harbour
over 1,000 years BC.
The area was called Cuan an Neimheadh
(the Harbour of Neimheidh).
These original inhabitants were
wiped out in a plague.

inhabitants had their village
name Cobh when the English
built a fort, Cove Fort, nearby.
Cobh is a Gaelicisation of the
English name Cove &
it shares the same pronunciation.
It has no meaning
in the Irish language.
For a brief period between 1849
and the establishment
of the Irish Free State (~1916),
the town was called Queenstown
after a visit from Queen Victoria.
Today, it’s back to Cobh.

Some locals told me that the owners
started renovation with a
1 million euro budget.
They finished the project with costs of 5 million euro.
But, the inside is fabulous, they love it
and have saved history.
