Caption: It’s difficult to write about Big Sur without repeating the same beautiful clichés – the sound of the waves, the sound of the wind, the soft grass and the silent gliding birds – they come and go very much like the waves themselves, or like the undulating coastline and the thin slip of road that closely follows it.

Caption: Big Sur refers to the region of central California where the Santa Lucia Mountains meet the Pacific coast. Gliding along US Highway 1 between Monterrey and San Simeon, we let the road lead us from Bixby Bridge to Pfeiffer Beach, and from there onward to McWay Falls, where a winding pathway takes you around a perfectly secluded waterfall.

Caption: At the foot of the Hearst estate, the road dips down toward the water and the Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery. There we found a rocky beach where 2000 kg Elephant seals lazily battle for space, but mostly just lie around enjoying their two month vacation. They are here from late spring to early summer and if you have the chance, I really recommend you pay them a visit. It’s been one of my most unexpectedly stirring encounters with nature so far.
