Caption: Mount Aso (阿蘇山, Aso-san) is the largest active volcano in Japan, and is among the largest in the world.
It stands in Aso Kujū National Park in Kumamoto Prefecture, on the island of Kyushu.
Its peak is 1,592 meters (5,223 ft) above sea level.

Caption: The Aso caldera is inhabited and is crossed by roads and railways. Its mountain pastures are used for cattle raising and dairy farming.
Aso caldera contains the city of Aso as well as Takamori and Minamiaso.

Caption: Aso's ancient caldera ranks among the world's largest. The caldera is about 12 miles (20 km) in diameter.
In the center of the caldera stand the mountain's active volcanic peaks, including Mount Nakadake, whose spectacular crater is accessible to tourists.

It has been dismantled as a result of damage sustained during the 2016 Kumamoto earthquakes and a shuttle bus now runs from the original boarding area to the crater edge.
