Caption: The Aran Islands are an archipelago off the coast of Galway, Ireland. Sparsely populated, they have been inhabited for millennia and are an amazing place to escape to.

Caption: I stayed on Inis Oírr (Inisheer). It’s the island nearest to the “mainland” of Ireland and has a few small hotels and Airbnb locations. You can also camp on the island.

Caption: As the town is so small, it’s easy to step back in time. This playground is set right beneath ancient castle ruins.

Caption: Horse drawn carts and bikes are available for transportation on the island but I chose walking. There are some pretty spectacular views on the island.

Caption: I departed from the small port town of Doolin. The ferry also has routine trips to see the Cliffs of Moher (highly recommend adding that in).
