Caption: On April 24, 2015, I was passing through Tokyo and had a chance to visit the house that was the private residence of the architect Kunio Maekawa (1905-1986) and his wife.
Born in Niigata City, he graduated from Tokyo Imperial University in 1928. For two years, he worked in France for
Le Corbusier before establishing his own firm in Tokyo, the Kunio Maekawa Architecture Office. In 1938, he employed Kenzo Tange for 4 years and is considered one of Tange's mentors.
Caption: Maekawa's house was built in 1942 at 3-chome, Kamiosaki, Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo, Japan.
During the years of war, due to the limited supply of building materials,
it was illegal to build a residence that exceeded 100 sq meters.
The building area is 111.55 sq meters. The total floor area is 110.56 sq meters.
