Caption: One of the things that people often comment on when I share our coastal walks is how quiet they are. “Where is everyone?” is a common question. But we time our walks for the quieter times. We prefer the cooler days when less people might be thinking about heading to the beach. We love the cold and blustery days when even fewer folk might be enticed by an exposed coastal walk where the wind is whipping in off the sea.

Caption: And we choose the quieter routes. Gullane beach can be busy, but you might only encounter a few other people on this clifftop walk that leads towards Gullane Point. Winding down from the path to the small bay below, we often find ourselves alone on the shelly beach. So this has become a favourite walk for those days when we want to enjoy the open views and the quiet.

Caption: The path that leads to the beach is pretty easy to miss, but if you look out for the WW2 sea defences, you won’t go wrong.

Caption: I have a thing for rocks. And shells. And all the different coastal textures. Should you ever join me for one of these walks (looking at you @jordanfoy and @rachelhelsby) be warned: there’s going to be a bit of wandering over rocks photographing rock pools, lichen formations, and all manner of textures. Harris, meanwhile, will be standing on rocks being photographed.

Caption: Every beach along the East Lothian coastline has a different character, and this is often most evident in the shells and in the rock formations and pebbles. On this walk, I found a few beautifully coloured rocks and pebbles. Look at these colours!
