Caption: I had a meeting last week at Holyrood in Edinburgh, so I thought I'd take a few photos on my way back along a short section of the Royal Mile. I've been meaning to do a #stellerwalk on the Royal Mile for so long. This isn't it! This is a tiny snapshot. But it has whet my appetite for a longer photo walk.

Caption: Dunbar's Close Garden was created by Sir Patrick Geddes (1854-1932) who lived on the Royal Mile at the time. Geddes had the vision for a network of gardens around the city and this space was laid out in the style and character of a 17th century garden.

Caption: After falling into disrepair in the 1970s, the garden was saved by a bequest from The Mushroom Trust, which gifted the land to the City of Edinburgh Parks Department. In 1978 the garden was rebuilt by landscape architect Seamus Filor.

Caption: Just up the road you'll find Canongate Kirk, which dates from 1691.

Caption: The church was built thanks to a large bequest from a local merchant. The plaque reads:
“In 1688 King James VII ordained that the Mortification of Thos. Moodie, granted in 1649 to build a Church, should be applied to the erection of this structure”.

Caption: The previous week Harris and I had met with @BereftStatistic who was visiting Edinburgh for the day with her parents. We had paused here, in the courtyard outside the Museum of Edinburgh, which is just opposite Canongate Kirk. So I popped back for a quick photo.

Caption: And then, finally, the Scottish Poetry Library. This building is a favourite of mine - these cobalt blue bricks! - and was designed in 1999 by Malcolm Fraser Architects.
