The Cape Henry Lighthouse is one of the most fascinating historic sites in Virginia. Completed in 1792, it was the first federally funded public works project of the newly formed U.S. government and was commissioned by George Washington. It guided ships into the Chesapeake Bay for nearly a century before a second lighthouse was built just 350 feet away in 1881. Today, the newer black-and-white striped lighthouse remains an active aid to navigation, while the original lighthouse is open to visitors. On days when weather and conditions allow, you can climb to the top for panoramic views of the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean. Planning a visit? 📍 Located on Joint Expeditionary Base Fort Story ⚠️ Since it's located on an active military base, civilian visitors ages 18+ must purchase timed tickets in advance and complete the required Fort Story security form at least 5 days before their visit.
