Is Portland, Maine for Black Travelers? We think so! After a great first trip in 2024, we returned again, but this time to hear directly from the community. Maine is the whitest state in America but we felt very welcomed during our first trip to Maine in 2024! So we came back. This time to connect with the local community and see what’s really happening behind the scenes. I must say Portland, Maine came through again! There are a variety of program and initiatives targeted for Black youth and immigrants in the Maine community that I was quite impressed with. One that really stood out was the Lift All Boats program. It’s actively breaking systemic barriers and helping Black youth enter Maine’s lobstering industry, a heritage fishery. I highly recommend Portland, Maine to our Black Travel Community because on the surface and behind that, Maine is continuing to do the work to be inclusive!
