In the fading light of evening, the Goddess of Mercy Temple glows like an ember in the heart of George Town. Thick coils of smoke curl from the giant incense sticks planted in the courtyard, rising slowly into the dusky sky like prayers made visible. It stings your eyes, soft and sharp all at once, forcing you to blink, to feel. The air is heavy with the scent—sweet, woody, ancient. A thousand offerings smoulder in the open furnaces: joss paper curling into flame, fruit left beside flickering candles, whispers of devotion carried away in smoke. Everything feels suspended, hushed, wrapped in a veil of incense and reverence. Here, the sacred floats. Here, the smoke remembers.
