🚶♂️Come explore some hidden history in the UP by hiking through the Fiborn Karst Preserve!🚶♀️ 🏘️This unique spot was once a limestone quarry town, supplying crucial materials to Algoma Steel in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario back in the early 1900s. 🕳️In 1987, the former quarry was purchased by the Michigan Karst Conservancy to protect and preserve this unique geological place, which is also home to Michigan’s longest known cave that formed during the end of the ice age about 7000 to 10000 years ago. 🪨🌲Now, you can explore the remnants of the former quarry’s past life on two self-guided trails, winding through old quarry structures, employee housing foundations, and the unique and interesting natural beauty that remains. 🥾🌲The trails include: 🕳️The Sinkhole trail that goes past many sinkholes (obviously) and a creek that disappears under the ground. 🌲Barbara Ann Petrie Memorial Trail - 1.5 miles, goes around the edge of the quarry, through second growth forest, sinks, ruins, and a pond.
