Founded by St. Augustine after 597 AD, this is England’s first cathedral. This was also the site of St. Thomas’s martyrdom in 1170, when the king betrayed him and sent three knights to murder him. He stayed at the church praying as they approached and completed their orders. We spent a lot of time here learning about the history. There’s also a crypt below the church that is incredibly moving (no cameras allowed out of respect). This church and St. Martin’s were our favorite things to see in Canterbury.
